4:30pm-6:30pm, Come see the new performance of Spontaneous Aura at
Angels Gate Cultural Center, Building H. What is art?
Is it static and austere, created to be hung on a wall
and remain inviolable?
Or is it dynamic, unable to exist as a commodifiable object,
only existing fully in the now?
Angels Gate explores this question with "Spontaneous Aura," an exhibition of some of the most innovative and exciting artists from across a full spectrum of performing arts. Featuring readings from stand-up poet and progenitor of the Long Beach poetry scene Gerald Locklin, the improvised electronic soundscapes of experimental composer and guitarist Shin Kawasaki, performance from installation group FLOOD, and a collection of past works from longtime Angels Gate collaborator Jocelyn Foye. Plus, performances from local poets and artists.
Spend an afternoon in Building H with some of LA and the Port area's most unconventional performers. Admission and parking are free, and refreshments will be available on site.
Following the opening of "For Fame and Love," a new rock n' roll themed exhibit in Gallery A. Angels Gate Cultural Center,

7:30am. Lane Victory Summer Cruise. The Lane Victory is a National Historic Landmark and a fully operational ship. We are Coast Guard approved to take as many as 800 passengers on each cruise. Every year prior to our cruises the ship has a complete Coast Guard inspection. Boarding for the summer cruises starts at 7:30 AM; guests should arrive early to allow plenty of time to pass through the security check. Photo ID is required and all bags are subject to search. Boarding ends and the gangway is raised at 8:30 AM. Our ship departs at 9 a.m. for a fabulous cruise filled with fun, food, fellowship, dancing and many interesting happenings during our time at sea. We return around 4:30 PM. To start each cruise we enjoy a very tasty continental breakfast. At 9:00 the tugs make fast to the ship, we steam down the main channel, across the outer harbor past the breakwater and out to the open sea. At this point during each cruise there is a Memorial Service held for one of the more than 700 merchant ships lost during WWII. The U.S. Naval Cadets Honor Guard presides as a wreath is placed over the side with a moment of silence for the Civilian Merchant Marine and Naval Armed Guard crew lost. Lane Victory Website Berth 94

7:00pm-11:00pm. Flazh!Alley Art Studio presents "The Beauty of Righteousness" Romantic Worlds & Grand Visions By Andrea Rushing.
Nationally recognized San Diego, California fine art painter, Andrea Rushing, brings his enchanting and passionate imagery as the ideal closing exhibit before Flazh!Alley Art Studio takes its summer hiatus till September 6, 2009.
Mr. Rushing's distinctly European sensibility is driven by a profound interest in the human condition and by the insights humanity displays in response to life's challenges. At its lightest Rushing's work suggests Magritte, showing life in an amused juxtaposition; at its most intense, Dali or Rousseau, where man and image confront each other in unnerving contrast.
As well as his representation in fine arts galleries throughout Southern California Mr. Rushing's commercial art clients include MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada, all El Torito's Mexican Restaurants from San Diego, CA to St. Louis, Ms and Charlie Brown's Restaurants in San Francisco and Laguna Hills, California among others.
ADULTS ONLY (18 and over)."The Beauty of Righteousness" can also be seen by appointment. Please call, 310.833.3633 or flazhalley@aol.com.

6:00pm, The Stillman Sawyer Memorial Concert Committee, at First Presbyterian Church of San Pedro, present FREE to the public: An evening of Jazz and Blues with Rob Klopfenstein and Friends. Many folks in San Pedro already know Rob Klopfenstein and his music from his regular gigs around town, and as any one who has heard him play can attest this is an opportunity to start your summer with an evening of music with a spectacular musical talent that will keep your toes tapping all summer long. Rob first sat himself on a piano bench at age seven. By sixteen, this Indiana boy was making music of all kinds; jazz, rock, country and blues. He’s equally at home with a Bach fugue or a walking bass. His warm tenor voice is at home doing a favorite standard or a rock ballad. Rob’s invited three gents who sit in with him on a regular basis.Harry Hall who has been playing a fiddle for longer than most people have been alive. Powering through his 90’s with a ready wink and a smile, Harry’s quick and nimble playing has been known to shred the horsehair right off his bow. Allan Petker who has never met a stringed instrument he didn't’t like, is an accomplished musician, composer, conductor and music publisher. Allan, based here in San Pedro for almost ten years has an excellent reputation that extends far beyond this small port town. And Jack Widmark a long time dixieland jazz clarinet player rounds out this remarkable quartet. Jack plays saxophone with the San Pedro based group "Time Machine" and is the current president of "Southern California Hot Jazz Society", the oldest such organization in the United States, west of the Mississippi. This event marks the third Stillman Sawyer Memorial Concert sponsored by the church, and offered free to South Bay residents. Mr. Sawyer, a church member and friend who passed away in November 2007, blessed the church with two large donations (see The Daily Breeze 11/10/07 & 11/17/07). These concerts are offered to honor these gifts, and fulfill Sawyer’s desire for San Pedro’s oldest church to continue to serve and celebrate the community. Concertgoers are also invited to a light reception at the church, following the concert. There is both on- and off-street parking but please arrive early: seating is limited. 731 South Averi l l Avenue, San Pedro, CA 90732 www.firstpressanpedro.org • (310) 832-7597

6:00pm-9:00pm. Closing Reception at Gallery Azul of Exhibit called Matron of Anti-establishment by Brandon H. Harrison. Gallery Azul is holding a closing reception on this exhibit which celebrated Women's Heritage month by having artists create an original piece which pays tribute or represents inspiring women who have exhibited the courage and determination to reach beyond the ordinary and expected, often braving insurmountable sexual and political tyrannies in the process. Women represented have had or have in common the passion and drive, the insight and endurance, to make deep and lasting contributions in their respective fields. 2:00pm-9:00pm. Wine Tasting at Off the Vine Wines: Blind tasting is the best way to objectively taste wine. It is the way wine experts taste wines. R. Michael Mondavi, Chairman and former CEO of The Robert Mondavi Corporation, in a recent quote, emphasize the importance of blind tasting; "Your mind overrides your palate and your sensory perceptions when you don't taste blind". At blind wine tasting events, guests have no idea what wine varieties, brands, flavors, or even what price range they're going to sample. This can be a lot of fun because some people might have a preconceived notion or even a bit of prejudice about certain kinds of wines, so having a blind wine tasting eliminates this sort of bias. For $12 ($8 OTV Members) you get five 1.5 ounce pours along with crackers (cheese is available at an additional cost). Off The Vine, 491 6th Street #103, San Pedro. On the corner of 6th and Pacific Across from the Warner Grand Theatre (310) 831-1551
